Alternative Therapies-
Some parents look for alternative therapies to compliment the mainstream Physio, Occupational and Speech. These therapies have a cost to them and are not usually covered by government funding. Some private health covers may cover some of these therapies.
In this section of our site we will give you the basic information on the Alternative Therapies and some websites for more information. In giving this information and websites we are not endorsing any particular provider. Always talk to your therapists, doctors and other parents before embarking on any new therapy.
At ausDoCC we are interested in providing you information on all aspects of helping your DCCer but while some of our parents have participated in these therapies, our organisation does not endorse any particular therapy. You should always discuss alternatives with your current therapists and your doctors, and it is helpful to also talk to other parents who have experience in using these methods to help their child. While researching this section we found this site from South Australia who talk to both sides of the debate.

Feldenkrais or anat baniel method
A neuro developmental therapy that works on patterning the child's brain in order to make it easier to learn or acquire new movements or skills. It works on the theory of neuro plasticity.

Intensive Model of Therapy
Builds on standard therapies but on a more intensive level. Is typically a 3 week block of therapy involving 3-4 hours a day, 5 days a week of Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy. It helps to accelerate results and can push a child 12months ahead in progress.
Suit therapy (neuro suit or therasuit)
is usually combined with intensive therapy but helps the child to learn better body awareness thru increased proprioception to the brain. It also works to correct body alignment and accentuate better movement patterns. It can really challenge a child’s reflexes and also helped tactile issues and increase strength and body awareness.

Point Percussion Therapy (PPT) is a technique developed in the 1980's by a Chinese orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Wang Zhaopu. PPT is a physical exercise program.. The simplified PPT exercises are simple, safe and easy to use at home; they are just like a baby gym and baby aerobic exercises for your special child.
PT is a relatively new technique in traditional Chinese orthopaedics, resulting from a combination of acupuncture theory, martial arts skills and traditional orthopaedics manipulation.
What is kinesiology?
Kinesiology is a therapy where a practitioner will assess a patient's health by testing their muscles. The idea is that any imbalance of physique, chemistry, nutrition or emotion can be detected by the variation of stress resistance in various muscle groups. The practitioner can then treat what he or she finds by employing methods of acupressure on certain points of the anatomy and this readjusts the nervous system.
Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy)
Is physiotherapy conducted in warm water. Hydrotherapy is useful when land-based treatment and exercise is difficult due to pain or disability. The buoyancy unloads joints to help establish an environment where pain is reduced.
People with disabilities can obtain beneficial results from association with horses. The movement of a horse strengthens muscles throughout a rider's body and promotes better overall health. In many cases, riding has also led to increased mobility for the rider. Horses can also provide psychological benefits to people whether they actually ride or not.
Therapeutic riding begins with gentle exercises performed on horseback. These exercises include such things as leaning forward to pet the horse's neck, leaning backwards to pat the horse's rump and twisting left and right in the saddle. Each rider is assisted by 'side walkers' who make sure that they remain secure in the saddle while performing the exercises. The rhythmic movement of the horses walk can stimulate nerves and the exercises increase mobility.
Osteopaths treat babies, children and teenagers for a range of conditions. Effective, early treatment can prevent other problems from occurring. Osteopaths commonly treat babies with:
- developmental problems
- constant crying
- feeding difficulties
- digestive problems and constipation
- skull deformation or flat head syndrome
A range of problems may interfere with the normal development of a child. Trauma during pregnancy and birth, childhood accidents and falls, or simply the rapid changes of the body’s growth can create or contribute to problems associated with bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Other issues faced by children include posture problems, inflammatory conditions and sporting injuries.
Chiropractors use a specific type of manipulation called an adjustment to improve many health problems that are related to the skeleton and muscular system. Spinal conditions such as lower back or neck pain, conditions of areas such as the knees and shoulders, as well as other health problems such as headaches and period pain, may all be helped by chiropractic treatment.
